I really want to know.

In any event, lots of people were very tempted today to call a bottom when we'd recovered to positive after a scary open. Even Bob Pisani -- who is ordinarily less ebullient -- got sucked in for a bit, but repented later in the day.

I'm a little surprised I didn't hear the phrase "dead cat bounce". Because that's what it looked like to me.

A. and I, once again, dozed in front of CNBC. Occasionally, I'd try to read _Consuming Motherhood_. I'll eventually finish it and review it.

I'm very, very glad that my dad (who started college accounts for my kids years ago) took them out of stocks and put the money in guaranteed interest funds a while back. (It might or might not have mattered about my daughter's accounts, as they would have been largely in guaranteed funds by now anyway, but my son's account would have done a free-fall, I'm pretty sure.) I am not too worried about our retirement accounts: short of a total meltdown (in which case we'll all be in a hole together and who the heck cares about the details), we have time to recover, and dollar-cost averaging should work out well eventually. Jobs I do worry about. The house value I don't. We paid what we could afford, and we have a house that works. We weren't about to sell it or borrow a lot of money on it anyway, and if its value on paper is low, well, then so will the taxes be, too, so there you are.

Are there any bicycle manufacturers whose stock is going cheap? I keep hearing about a boom in bike sales.

It's around $28 at the moment, and the 52-week high was $51 and change. Assuming it eventually gets back up to midway between those two prices, that would be about a 40% hike over where it is now. I know almost zip about stocks, though.
