I woke up with it and I still had it when I went to bed (somewhat early). Some days are just like that.

I went to Moodz with A. We brought a lunch for her, because she hadn’t had lunch. Her hair looks great. I got mine cut and foiled and mine looks amazing. The color from last time held really well, so I’m extra colorful now. Good times. I brought a holiday card for C., and tipped extra (realized after that it was 100% on top of the services, but didn’t exactly plan it that way).

I walked with M.

The long skinny “french” bread on the counter that we’d bought for visitors last week was completely dried out so I made french toast for dinner. Yum.

I watched Knives Out 3: Wake Up Dead Man. It was fantastic. It was a real adventure getting the TV setup to work. I had to unplug the apple tv and plug it back in, then I had to charge the apple remote, then I had to log into netflix. This may contribute to why I really struggle to motivate to watch TV. It’s quite a challenge to watch TV and so easy to read on my kindle or watch tiktok on my ipad. I did NOT however get a vacuum out and deal with all the dust bunnies around the cords. I’ve decided to push back on this whole watch TV = vacuuming thing I’ve got going.

So very many of my friends watch so very much TV and we’re all roughly the same age. I don’t know how they do it. It’s extremely difficult. I don’t just mean getting the damn thing working. Obviously, once you’ve done that, it’s easy if you keep watching TV most days because you deal with the remote recharge and the apple tv probably stays on and netflix stays logged in and all that. It probably helps if you just have the one TV, and aren’t switching between one in the living room, one in the bedroom and one in front of the treadmill. (None of this should be regarded as a complaint on my part. These are not problems. These are purely observations. If you want to “first world problems” at me to convince yourself that you are somehow better than me, I’ll just openly concede from the start that you are better than me. That’s not a competition I intended to participate in, so I’d prefer if you won it.) I’d like to stay at least marginally more connected to the general culture than I currently am (I mean, staying mostly up to date on the social media, and I’ve never given up on reading, obviously). Also, I’m looking at that Elmo and Mark Rober holiday special. If you’ve seen it and have an opinion on it, feel free to comment.

ETA: On the off chance you want my opinion about Wake Up Dead Man, it operates quite nicely as homage to locked room mysteries, and there continue to be endless references to the thin genre fiction of yore, often in ways that are wildly anachronistic. The signing line at the tail end is absolutely fantastic, all men dressed the same way and the author not at all quietly horrified by that.

As commentary on Catholicism, it is extremely rewarding. It never even approaches the pdf issues, but there’s still so very much left to work with that has been eclipsed by the pdf issues that it’s quite nice to see someone really dig into them. The back and forth between the ex-boxer priest and Benoit is charming and rewarding in every way. The interactions between the ex-boxer and his sponsor within the church hierarchy is also really interesting, as commentary on how certain types of highly inappropriate behavior is nevertheless extremely desirable within organizations, and also that the church is, fundamentally, a very large organization and with all the dynamics of very large organizations.
