I got the bird in the oven before 10 am, mostly because I pulled out the neck and giblets and since R. is never that excited about in bird stuffing, and the kids don’t like it anyway, I just put it in and started it up.

The neck and giblets got water and are simmering.

I x’ed then boiled cooled and peeled half the bag of Trader Joe’s chestnuts. That was fun! I saved the chestnut water.

I cooked some white rice for the kids.

I sauteed some celery, peppers and ginger in olive oil and added some black pepper and New Mexico red (both ground). I sauteed some mushrooms in olive oil (I put the stems in with the turkey neck). I cooked a sweet pork sausage from Lilac hedge (removed from casing and broken up). I toasted some of the golden phoenix rice (this is the stuff I use for risotto, because it has almost exactly the same characteristics as arborio). I reheated the chestnut water, made sure R. got a taste, and then assembled the celery, peppers, ginger, mushrooms, pork sausage, rice, chestnut water, into my korean pot with the lid, and put it in the oven. After a while, I took it out, surveyed it, added some of the turkey stock, and then put it back.

I am making muffins with corn meal from the farm share, blueberries from Roche Bros and honey from lilac hedge.

I set up the usual breakfasts.

It’s been a busy but calm and enjoyable morning!

ETA:

So, everything turned out great, altho I had to get R. to help flip the turkey over, and we wound up eating a little later than 3. But the bird was cooked and not overcooked, so there’s that.

T. objected to eating at the table in the eat-in part of the kitchen, instead of the dining room, until R. pointed out that we bought that table for Thanksgivings. I was really upset about the whole thing.

A. ate in her room, because misophonia.

If T. manages to actually get to attend someone else’s Thanksgiving next year (this one did not work out for reasons completely unrelated to us), I’m thinking I might get on a plane for T-weekend and go celebrate with people Elsewhere. R. has never really liked the holiday, and A.’s misophonia makes it miserable for her. We’ll see.

In the meantime, I read last night and today. Texas Kisses is a collection of short stories by Jenny Schwartz that are Extremely G-Rated, but very sweet and cozy. I enjoyed it. The Worst Best Man by Mia Sosa has some of the same characters as The Wedding Crasher. I really love all the women at Rio de Wheaton, and the story of Lina getting together with Max, the brother of the man who dumped Lina on their wedding day, is really excellent. One of the best things about a Mia Sosa novel is the care with which family dynamics are depicted. They are shown, as of course a good author ought to do, but characters also discuss their perceptions of relationships of all sorts — influence of parents, past romantic relationships, friends, etc. As one does!
