When I was flying into Seattle recently, I texted a cousin I have not seen in around 30 years. He very likely attended my first wedding, and equally likely, I have not seen him since. We were both no longer JW’s, but our parents were. There was neither any strong desire to reconnect on either side while we were both in Seattle, nor any really easy way to re-establish contact. Later, I was on the east coast, and he stayed in the Seattle area, but our social media activities were on different platforms, and our social circles had zero overlap (it’s not like we were specifically avoiding each other). But I’m slowly working my way back through the list of various relatives who are not currently JW’s and re-establishing (or establishing for the first time) at least holiday card and phone call/social media level of contact. We’d connected fairly recently via ancestry DNA testing, and agreed to attempt to meet if we were in the same area. But when I texted him, crickets.
However, when he came out here a few days ago, he texted me (and saw the text I had sent) and after a phone conversation and some texts about the best way to meet up, I made a 2 night reservation at Jordan Hotel in Newry, Maine, which skiiers will recognize as a ski resort. My cousin was out to do the rally (someone rented his car, so he was doing tech on the car). Looking at a map of the area, I thought R. could get a nice hilly out and back to Grafton Notch, and perhaps could attempt a really long loop — hence the 2 night reservation. Newry is a bit of a haul for a there-and-back same day. Overnight would have been fine if R. decided to stay at home.
We stopped at Sebago in Scarborough for lunch and beer. We had dinner with my cousin at Sunday River Brewing. The hotel room is fantastic. I booked a 2 bedroom suite, got the exec 2 bedroom and it has in unit laundry in addition to the full kitchen. Very nice! Big table and benches and chairs AND a desk AND a big coffee table with comfy sofa and chairs.
Super fun! My cousin grew up to be a really great man, which is no surprise, because he was a fun kid — very chill, and never cruel.
