I only ever cancel one day of alarm (I use my Dot). But apparently, when R. and A. turned off their alarms, they turned them Off. I kept waiting for someone to demand my help and was secretly hoping that it would not be needed (I mostly do hair at this point in the mornings). Alas, I eventually got up only to discover that there were people still sleeping. How dare they!
Anyway.
They are out the door now and I have tea. We’ll see what Murphy has in store for us I guess.
ETA:
A. and I watched (recently, like, within the last week) an old (like, from Imbolc) PiperCJ post about Brigid and Imbolc. I always forget Imbolc, and I’m going to make more of an effort. The quarter days and cross-quarter days all serve useful markers, but some are much easier to remember than others. That ease of remembering is, I swear, inversely correlated to the importance of remembering. Imbolc marks the beginning of the massive springtime spike and whether we think we experience that spike or not, we are surrounded by each other and sooooo many people some time in February/March start running around with mad cleaning energy and catch up on all the things energy and generally displaying somewhat unhealthy, anxiety driven Must Do All the Things. To be clear, I know I experience that spike, and so does R. and we work consciously to get sleep at this time of year, but not everyone is being so careful.
But here is an update on the bread baking experiments.
I’ve been bolting turkey red using a drum sifter. Obviously, sifting kicks up a lot of flour dust, and that is Not Healthy. So a while back — pretty much after I did this once and realized it was a problem — I found some silicone “lids”, and I now sift with one of these things on the drum sifter. You can use a towel (I have) but the benefit of the silicone “lid” is that it is clear (well, mine are) so you can see more or less how you are doing.
It’s still time consuming, tho, and you have to do it in stages because if you overload the sifter all at once it doesn’t work as well and so forth. I keep looking at ways to automate this. Here is a list of things I have found.
KitchenAid Mixer (what I had, and am sending off to a friend) accessory attachment. The mixer has a beefy motor, so basically, the accessory mooches off that to get vibration. I looked at pictures. I don’t regret never looking into this when it might have been relevant.
Komo Mill accessory attachment: this one is legimately insane. I mean, it’s beautiful! And like the KitchenAid Mixer accessory, mooching off a motor you already have. Here is Pleasant Hill’s detail page: https://pleasanthillgrain.com/komo-flour-sifter. I’ll quote a paragraph for you:
“After first grinding flour from grain, just unscrew the mill's hopper, lift out the upper stone, and screw the sifter assembly on where the hopper was. With your just-milled flour in the sifter chamber, flip the mill switch on, and rotating brushes quickly work the finest flour through the screen at bottom, and out through the mill spout, so the bran remains above.”
That’s a _lot_ of disassembly and reassembly _every_ _single_ _time_ you mill and then want to sift. No.
Bosch Universal Plus sifter accessory. Same same — mooching off the motor. Pictures suggest that it is _much_ less sketchy than the KitchenAid. The sifter can sit on top of the main bowl, so you could mill over at your KoMo (or whatever), pour into the sifter and then it would go down into the main bowl. This is a plausible process! They sell it with a 70 mesh. WTF! I sift with a 40 and sometimes think man, this is a little too small. I’m not going to a 70! That’s insane. But is the screen replaceable? Initially, I thought no, but those may have been old reviews, because the MagicMill website shows a replaceable screen so you can buy a 40 mesh. Which is _absolutely_ perfect.
MagicMill has the accessory and the spare part supposedly in stock, but that website is acting weird and I’ve never ordered from them so I’m not sure what to think. Also, Pleasant Hill sent me a $30 gift card after I ordered the Bosch Universal Plus. Pleasant Hill says they expect the sifter back in stock before the end of the month, so I’m going to try to use my $30 gift card on that and see what happens.
Anyway.
