A. missed her swim lesson last Sunday because we came back from the Cape with a cold.

Today, we got her there, walking onto the pool deck 1 minute before her swim lesson, showered and ready to go. She went to a corner, sat down, and waited there for 40 minutes for someone to call her for her 30 minute lesson. I was downstairs (I had not gone up to the pool deck) wondering why she was not coming back. I went up, found her, sitting. She had never said a word to anyone, and had not come back down the stairs to find me waiting for her by the locker room. It’s like, a half a flight of steps.

I was listening for a meltdown in case a rescue was needed, but otherwise relying on the fact that in previous lessons, I’d sat in the car while she walked in to go to her lesson. Apparently, in previous lesson blocks, they called her over. For whatever reason, that’s not happening this time, probably because she missed the first lesson of the block and it’s a different instructor.

*sigh*

So, we went home, got her lunch and into a tub because she wanted to be in water, and we talked about what had happened and why and what we could do to help her the next time she’s waiting for something to happen that isn’t happening so that she has a plan for how to speak up for herself. She’s got some reservations about speaking up for herself that we will work on by going out to eat and having her place the order for both of us (at a quiet time of day, on a less busy day of the week).

Learning is happening, altho perhaps not swimming learning. Hopefully, next week will be a bit more successful.

ETA: Apparently, the school hasn’t spoken up about this particular type of issue (waiting until someone tells her to go do something else) even tho they have some level of awareness about it. That might be because it’s such a relief to not be nagged at and she’s quite compliant about directions in general as long as she understands them. It could also be that compared to other people like her in the school, the start of the school year has been going really well for her, and so relative priorities.

This also does not happen to R., because he goes out onto the pool deck with her, however, I really do not have the tolerance for the pool deck that I once did — the heat, humidity, and the echo-y sound is really hard to deal with. If I’d dressed and prepared for it (ear plugs, etc.) it might have been different.
