We packed up in the morning and got everything into the van. Well, R. did. I was skeptical, and I did bump my head against the seat of his bike a few times, but it honestly was not bad. It was raining the whole way, tho.

We stopped at Janine cafe for brunch, where apparently the message I left yesterday afternoon correctly updated our reservation. Yay! L. and I had the avocado toast and cafe au lait with lait d’avoin (oat milk and I may have spelled that wrong). I. got the beer and mushrooms on toast and it looked divine altho also completely lethal to me. R. and A. got the hot chocolate with the homemade marshmallow. That was like a whole chemistry experiment to assemble it. Very fun! She had a cinnamon roll and a cup of berries. R. got the yogurt. Everything was completely over the top and delightful.

We dropped I. and L. off at Hotel du Vieux Quebec, and then drove to the Chateau. We checked in and deposited A. in the room, and then R. and I walked in the direction of Hotel du Vieux Quebec, but without telling L. and I., because we figured we’d never actually make it there (we did eventually walk past it, but they were at Le Hobbit, and we didn’t even check in on them because by then we had Plans). We stopped at several menus, and went in and had dug legs and tuna tartare tacos at Mur Mur with a beer (Boreale Noire, maybe?) and a Manhattan. That was yum, so we proceeded to Maison Smith and got macrons which we did not eat. From there we worked our way to Don Vegan, where we got a table for about a half hour (really crowded! On a rainy Monday) and ate a Don Cake and a chocolate molten cake. Super yummy. We also had a cognac we’d never tried (Gautier, I think?) and Wyzer’s whisky, which R. likes but is tricky to find in the states.

We took the funicular back up, walking past a ton of really cool closed art galleries. I took some photos so we would remember to go back when they are open. I also got photos of the awesome mural, and some of the pink guys in the square. I wasn’t expecting to see more pink guys — I thought that was a Montreal thing, but apparently it is wider than that. Maybe it’s a Quebec thing?

I ordered A. chicken fingers and chocolate cake from room service and the pillows I requested arrived while I was out. A. did the handover correctly, and, like R., she has concluded that I definitely overtip, and it will probably result in really good service. Room service said a 30 minute delay and I swear it showed up in 10 minutes. I overtipped them, too, because if it’s going to work this well, why not.

This has been an unexpectedly fun day. Montreal was lovely, but I’m already loving Quebec City so much more, even with all the hill. Possibly because the rain scared everyone else indoors so it isn’t particularly crowded and it’s no longer hot at all.
