I drove A. to Fusion for one class (which did not happen) and one homework cafe. She at least caught up on her homework? A lot of that was producing answers explaining why she didn’t understand enough to answer the questions, which seems kind of perfect in terms of life lessons all around. She says she is consciously NOT masking any more, which also seems like a good choice. You can fix things you don’t know about but only accidentally.

I was extremely skeptical about whether we would really be going to RavenCon, what with one thing and another, so I booked hotel that was cancelable, and JetBlue is always something I can recover the value from, and I did not make a parking reservation at Logan ahead of time. I tried to make one yesterday, and the reservations were sold out, so I drove to Fusion a second time, and then R. drove A. and me to Logan.

The flight was on time, and shorter than scheduled, and RIC is a pretty easy airport to deal with. National Car Rental at RIC is super informal, but again, very easy to deal with. I haven’t been able to convince the screen to show directions, so A. navigated, which is probably good, because you learn by doing. She’s getting better by the trip, which is very exciting (where trip is each drive in the car where she navigates).

We drove up to Sedona Taphouse, where there was a 20 minute waitlist. Unfortunately, I missed the text to come back, which happened in substantially less than 20 minutes, and didn’t notice for a while so I was removed from the waitlist. I’d made a call to my sister, wondering why she hadn’t left home yet, only to learn she was planning on coming tomorrow which honestly makes a ton of sense anyway. I’m mostly here because that’s how the RavenCon room date blocks worked. I’m happy about it, because it means we got to separate travel day from first day of the con. Also, my flights for this trip jumped around a ton, and if that had happened on the Friday, I would have probably completely missed Friday and been exhausted on Saturday so really what would be the point. This was a good choice, even tho I sort of did not make it myself and I then promptly forgot about it.

Anyway. I also went into the Publix to get peanut butter, and while there bought some fruit and vegan chocolate chip cookies and looked at the birthday cake/chocolate cake options. I think my sister is planning on getting something at Whole Foods for K.’s birthday which I think is either this weekend or later in the week. Either way, we’re celebrating that this weekend.

Because the waitlist had grown to an hour by the time I got back to the restaurant, we gave up, ate a banana and contemplated our options. We walked over (because it was a quarter mile, and there are sidewalks and the weather was gorgeous and there are controlled crossings) to Twin Hickory Tavern. I was initially slightly skeptical, as it was loud, but the manhattan was great with a good cherry (maybe amerena, maybe something local, not luxardo, but good). I got the seared tuna and a house salad, we split a side of fries and A. got the sliders. We were going to get A. the chocolate mousse cake but they were out. The loud turned out to be just fine. I would _happily_ go back. Highly recommend. Very friendly service.

We checked into the hotel and they handed us some water bottles, which was very nice. I had to have the pillows swapped, because they were all feather (all of them. All 8). The man who brought the foam pillows was completely gobsmacked (in a good way) by a $10 tip, which is a helluva way to calibrate Richmond VA vs Orlando FL, where it takes about 5X that to get a positive not quite as impressive a response. I actually felt bad about the tip, because I everything else I had was Orlando tip sized and I knew that was wrong. Getting foam pillows is so much better than no pillows, and down pillows will make me non-functional for the next day or so, and honestly could probably kill me. I appreciate it. Also, some of the elevators in this building are not working, so it took a while for him to get here and he was apologetic, which was sweet.

Anyway, we got settled in, and then A.’s wrist started hurting. Not sure what happened, but she was managing her own bag for at least part of our travels so she could have tweaked it somehow.
