Halloween Party!
Oct. 31st, 2021 11:00 pmPortal Playdate was missed / rescheduled to Monday. Oh well!
Family zoom was canceled out on by both of R.’s sisters. We did a two minute check in during a lull in the party.
Oh, yeah, party! We had 9 or 10 kids, depending on how you count P.’s older sister A., who was there to walk him over, back and make sure things went well for him. Looked like she had fun, too, tho! 3 parents stuck around — M.’s mom T. was there because M. said she wanted her to stay. A.’s mom M. stayed, because they live far enough way that trying to go and come back would be ludicrous, and also, we’ve spent so many hours talking over the years in the car back when the kids were doing therapeutic riding that we have an independent-of-the-kids friendship. S.’s dad V. stayed because one of S.’s parents always stays. Everyone else did a dropoff.
I cooked 5 burgers, a bunch of chicken nuggets and fries, and one grilled cheese sandwich. R. grilled some chicken ahead of time, and we had berries, mandarins, carrots / celery / baby tomatoes. There were a ton of chips and some fairly random candy (we bought it today, and apparently the store was completely cleaned out even the discount aisle). L. and her kids came by trick or treating, and we got a couple other groups of trick-or-treaters, so that was awesome.
A. retreated upstairs due to noise, and one of the guests, J. did as well because she was pretty overwhelmed. But J. came down for the movie.
There were mock sword fights. There was a running nerf gun battles. I’m glad we cleared some of the furniture and breakables out of the way. Tons of fun! It felt more normal than anything has in a long time.
ETA: R. attempted to bail out of party prep entirely, including the very last minute grocery store run, so I imposed an emergency family meeting. As a result of the meeting, T. and R. did the store run, and R. grilled the chicken. T. vacuumed the downstairs. And as a result, I actually was not completely wrecked before the party even started. R. went upstairs and did his (indoor) bike ride starting about 45 minutes before the party, and was done shortly after the meals were done. I didn’t see any reason why he needed to attend something that I expected to be loud (and it was) and that I expected all the other parents to treat as a drop-off event. He seemed to think he should. *shrug* At least we finally got the broken recliner out of the living room and into the basement; he still hasn’t even called the shop to find out if they know anyone who might be able to repair it. It’s been weeks.
