Today, I got up early to go back to Whole Foods to buy the horseradish root that they were out of yesterday. Yes, I got out of bed before 7 am, and went out without breakfast to get horseradish root. Commitment to the meal!

I came back and A. and I got ready (I took a shower) and had breakfast. Then we all headed in and got to the African American museum before it opened. I started A. on the 2nd floor with the interactive exhibits: that was great, then we watched part of the movie on the entry level about how they picked topics and exhibits and laid them out. We had lunch at Sweet Home Cafe, definitely part of the museum experience and wonderful food: I had Hoppin John and coleslaw. R. got the roasted fennel salad which was wonderful. After that, A. and I went through the concourse levels pretty fast. She really enjoyed it — I summarized it as best I could and she understands we will come back on future trips and pay more attention to details. I love that the chronological layout and the choices of exhibits make it so clear how every possible avenue to increase freedom for enslaved people and formerly enslaved people and descendants of them was tried by them, and tho they were thwarted at every turn, they kept at it, and each generation made real progress. This is not a passive story of a passive people. This is not a story of rescuing. It is the story of perseverance, and courage and the power of agency, no matter how dark and oppressive the environment. I cannot say enough how wonderful this museum is, and how truly American this story is.

We had planned to pop into the Jefferson Memorial, but we were tired so we headed back to the hotel for cupcakes and a brief rest. Then out to Tyson’s Corner to do the Marvel Damage Control The Void, which was super fun. Love Shuri!

Dinner was at Gordon Biersch, and was very tasty, kind server and very pleasant. And we parked in Terrace E, so virtually no walking, which is good because we were tired.
