Today, I got up early to go to Whole Foods to buy the groceries for Xmas Day. I also picked up the second rental car. Not sure if this was the right decision, but oh well! We went to the Supreme Court. That was interesting and they had some things about Sandra Day O’Connor. Even tho I vividly remember her being nominated and being the first woman on the court, I had not really internalized her political background. It took a while to confirm what was transparently obvious from the time frame that she participated in Republican politics in AZ, but wow, to think we really did appoint a white woman as the first woman on the bench and she was an anti-desegregationist. Talk about pitting oppressed groups against each other! She hung on the cusp of when Republicans switched from being all about the Southern Strategy based on race, to being all about the evangelical strategy based on abortion.

We tried to have lunch at the Monocle — closed until Jan 6. We ate at the West Wing Cafe. We went to the Postal Museum — that was pretty fun, altho A. was bored until she got to play with the design a stamp interactive computer thing. She liked that. The building is gorgeous and the exhibits interesting. Great to walk through a railcar set up as a sorting facility — I knew about those, but had not seen one in person until this one. They have the Owney the dog taxidermied there. Creepily awesome!

We tried to go out to dinner but failed; everywhere was slammed. I cooked A. some of the chicken nuggets I bought for Xmas for her. I also went to a VA ABC store in Oakton and bought a bottle of Peerless 3 year rye, some antica, ango, a box with several Woodford Reserve brand bitters, and a bottle of Woodford for my not BIL. We made sure to line up more dinner reservations for other nights we had not had them.
