I cooked the last of the two boxes of meals, one from Plated (za’atar cauliflower and crispy chickpea bowl) and one from Sunbasket (chicken skewers, also with za’atar, and lentil tagine with baharat). They were both excellent. I looked up the ingredients of the two (I didn’t spot them in the instructions, and they were supplied already mixed together), and while there is a fair amount of variation in these spice blends (not unlike curry), none of the lists I found included any allium (very unlike curry), so R. was able to have dinner unmodified beyond me swapping the onion in the lentil dish for some fennel.

Other than some leftovers (1/3 of the beef noodle bowl and the other half of the cauliflower, chickpea and quinoa above, which I had by myself for lunch) which will be eaten today, everything else from the two boxes is gone (one was delivered Sunday and the other Monday). We ate out on Tuesday night and R. did not bring any of the meal kits to work for lunch. I did bring the beef noodle bowl to Dutch lesson to share with my instructor. If you are looking for food for 2 people for 5 days, a Plated meal kit and a Sunbasket meal kit (3 meals, 2 servings each, the minimum), plus whatever you have for breakfast, some bread, and fruit, and any desserts you want will pretty much do it. I would imagine that this is probably generalizable. A. helped cooked, but did not eat any of the food. (Yes, we did have Sunday dinner out of one of them, but we will be having dinner out tonight, so it really is an even 5 days.)

A few friends on FB chimed in when I noted that I didn’t even like cauliflower, other than raw, until trying it roasted with sumac (a primary flavor in the za’atar blend). They all love roasted veg (don’t we all) and they all had favorite sumac / za’atar things to mention. Of course my sister was very familiar with both za’atar and baharat; she often shops at halal food markets and knows quite a lot about foods that I’ve only very occasionally had when eating out and never cooked with. Having discovered that we like these flavors and that they don’t typically incorporate garlic / onion powder, I’ll definitely be looking for more to try.

ETA: A. had a very fun play date, even tho the play structure is now gone.

ETAYA: I had pb&j for dinner the night of the concert.
