We got up for breakfast: A., T. and I. I brought coffee back for R. Waffles for them, bagel for me. I had a headache from interrupted sleep and probably a bit more liquor than I should have had with the quarter tab of Dramamine. We headed out to BLM Red Rocks. It was fun. Water bottle filler at the visitor center satellite bathroom building. We walked a little way down the hill at Calico 1. We walked out to look at the Petroglyphs. We stopped to take a lot of pictures. We left around 11 to get a late lunch (EST) or early lunch (PST) depending on your perspective. We had settled on McDonald’s in Summerlin, when I saw the BJ’s Brewhouse, and I swung in there. Their Red was awesome — R. got a sampler. A. got the small burgers without cheese; she ate most of 1 and half of another. I finished them. I had the Asian salad, which was really good. A.’s meal came with grapes and strawberries, which she ate half of. I had an iced tea, which eventually helped with the headache. We stopped at a McDonald’s to get her a medium fry on the way to Valley of Fire. We climbed around on the Beehives. We stopped at the visitor center. We stopped at one off the petrified logs. We climbed up the staircase at Atl-Atl rock and looked at those wall paintings. We drove the campground scenic loop and took pictures of the arch.
We left, and went back to Residence Inn for a brief rest. Then we went to Black Bear Diner in Henderson, which was really close. Pie cooler at the cashier, and pay at the cashier (I paid cash and left a cash tip). Newsprint menus that look like newspapers. Funny carved bears all over the place. Too bright and too loud — too bad! I would have loved it otherwise. Arnold Palmers for us — no liquor license. A. had the chicken fingers and really liked them. R. had chicken fried steak. I had my second Asian salad, this one shredded cabbage. It was good, but I didn’t finish it. T. had French toast sticks for dinner with some kind of apple dipping thing that was like apple pie filling. He didn’t eat it; R. said it was good.
We went to Trader Joe’s (all of this super close to the hotel, very convenient). We got granola bars, bananas, an apple, a bag of mandarin oranges, a six pack of beer for R., a box of frosted shredded bite size wheats (knock off), apple juice boxes, pistachios, a bottle of bulleit rye whisky and the TJ brand red vermouth. No bitters in evidence — I made a manhattan with twists from a mandarin. It really did not suck; I had two.
Despite the mid 50s temperature by evening, lots of noise at the outdoor pool. Maybe they are all from Minnesota. R. reminded me to leave a tip for housekeeping. I NEVER remember.
