No martial arts, cake, fried chicken

Last night, since it appeared no one was going to be making birthday cake happen _for_ me, I poked around and found coconut flakes and walnuts in the chest freezer. R. commented something that was roughly, oh, hey, this whole cake thing you’re talking about, you know your birthday is coming up.
I’m like, you know, I did wait until 11:30 pm the night before, but since no cake appeared to be in my future, that’s why I’m digging stuff out of the freezer the night before. Don’t be thinking that this is some random, unrelated thing. This is happening because of your total nonresponsiveness to all the hints about, you know, Go to Whole Foods and Get a Vegan Cake remarks I was making.
He apologized for his obliviousness.
Anyway.
Today, he said he had to leave the house, and FindMy indicated he was at Whole Foods, so I did _not_ start making a cake because one cake is great but two at a time is a problem. He came home with a couple vegan croissants, a vanilla cake (there wasn’t any chocolate), some vegan chocolate chip cookies and a vegan scone or two. Also, some Ben & Jerry’s frozen dessert. Hinting does not work, but whatever this was definitely did.
I had some of the pulled pork he made with a half a croissant; it was awesome.
He was about to grill the 5 pounds package of wings, and I asked to have a few to pan fry in bacon fat, because I had a lot of bacon fat and had never done this (either pan fry or cook chicken in bacon fat) before. I got out the cast iron (no enamel) frying pan and put a lot of bacon fat in there. In retrospect, I actually think the amount I originally had would have been perfect; R. seemed to think more would be better. He said aim for 3 hundred something degrees, but it was smoking when it was that hot (lots of bits of bacon in that bacon fat), so I just cut it down to where there was lots of sizzle but not much smoke. I cooked four wings, and they were _phenomenal_. Not the best texture ever, but the flavor was incredible. I wound up cooking all the chicken in the fat. As the amount of fat decreased, the result was crispier, which is why I think I would go with a little less fat in the future. I plan on air fryering them to reheat. A. had some for lunch.
The vanilla cake from Whole Foods was very tasty.
I took T. out for a drive.
