toddler fun: spelling bridge
Mar. 5th, 2008 02:30 pmWe've got some letters and numbers. T. really likes the Melissa and Doug wooden alphabet puzzle. He likes to take the letters out and line them up. Lately, this lining them up has taken the following forms:
dru (and sometimes m)
cut
corn
whel (only one of each letter -- this frustrates him, but he doesn't want to mix letter styles to spell wheel)
wand
Today, things got way out of hand. I watched him spell "bridge".
These are all words spelled on SuperWhy.
But dude, how many 2 year olds have you watched spell "bridge"?
RHI he recently spelled ladder, also.

Date: 2008-03-05 10:22 pm (UTC)He did the bridge thing again. He's really deliberate, but picking up speed. I watched him get the G and the E at the same time (he spots the E faster than he finds the G on the puzzle), and start to put the one in his right hand (the E) down first (he's quite right handed), then stop, put the G down, then the E.
I really believed in phonics. Not in any kind of hardcore way, but in the sound-it-out-to-figure-it-out way. But I gotta say, this is really compelling evidence for whole word.
Also, you will _never ever ever_ catch me agreeing with the anti-TV crowd.
