I had book group today. It was _Hillbilly Elegy_, which I never did quite finish. I didn’t like the author much, and I felt his analysis was terrible. But his descriptions are amazing. I don’t quite understand why he hasn’t adopted a therapeutic / psychological framework for making sense of his family. It would probably help him take better care of himself, too.
We had a great discussion, altho it was further interesting that a lot of the group didn’t really adopt a therapeutic framework / psychological framework for making sense of his family. They really accepted the idea that that level of violence was typical / representative of the culture, and they don’t seem to understand that Vance’s statements that he is “ordinary” are not humility, but a genuine misunderstanding on Vance’s part about how he differs from average. Oh well! Takes all kinds I guess. And if you want to read about just how extensive denial can be and how that interacts with politics (incoherently, obviously!), this is just the book for you.
