Feeling Pissy About Bike Helmets
Jun. 6th, 2009 04:55 pmIgnoring, for the moment, the whole why do we even need to wear them given the Dutch don't question, let's move on to more pressing questions:
(1) Bell bought Gyro. A while ago. Effectively no competition in this arena, unless you count Schwinn, Uvex, etc.
(2) "Universal" Women's maxes out at 57 cm. The exact _same_ maximum as the Universal Youth. That's a little weird. Even weirder, however,
(3) The "medium" in the 3 size category goes larger than the Universal Women's. Okay, maybe that makes sense. Maybe not. In any event, explain _this_:
(4) The "Large" Universal starts just above the Women's maximum (aka Extra Large).
You might reasonably ask, but why do you care? Well, I _bought_ an adult women's Gyro, and discovered that it maxed out smaller than my head the hard way. By putting it on. So I'm thinking, hey, I'll give it to B. She's shorter -- and presumably has a smaller head -- than I do. No such luck. Her head is at least as large as mine, possibly larger. Which tempts me to offer this thing to everyone at the party later this month just to see who has a head this sucker _would_ fit on.
I'm thinking maybe I'll keep it for when A. outgrows her toddler helmet.
Worse, I am so far completely failing to find any interestingly styled helmets outside the "Youth" and "Women's" categories. Booooorrrrring really fails to capture what I'm looking at and there is no excuse for this. It's plastic on styrofoam. How hard would it be to make, say, a Rietveld inspired helmet? The jerseys out there are a RIOT of pattern and color. It's not like cyclists are unprepared to wear extraordinarily weird looking crap on the rest of their body. You'd think putting a cap on that wouldn't be much of a stretch. Apparently, however, all that stretch is being used in their shorts.
