"For the sake of argument, let's say I'm an avid reader who buys two paperbacks per month from Amazon."
Too much conflation to be sure of buying and reading and where one buys from, but it is not unreasonable to assume he means his reading for the month are those two paperbacks (not that a seriously avid reader works this way, but bear with me here).
That's not avid.
ETA: He says shortly thereafter:
"That brings my two-paperback-a-month habit (books + shipping) to $447.12 per year." further supporting the hypothesis that this is the extent of his addiction.

When I did my payout analysis of the kindle, I used my _actual_ purchases _from_ Amazon (so assuming the kindle _exclusively_ cannabilized Amazon purchases and had no impact on purchases from other sources, which is manifestly untrue in practice). I came up with a threeish year to payout, in part because I was buying a fair amount used through Amazon. His payout time period was two years. Interesting where people's breakpoints fall, particularly given that I did, indeed, buy a kindle 2 (well before projected breakeven -- I haven't done the analysis yet tho to be certain).
