Just a Little Too on the Nose
Apr. 13th, 2025 08:42 pmI’ve really been successful at decluttering lately, altho not overjoyed about the whole thing. I’m trying to puzzle out this I’m-Good-At-It-And-Also-Increasingly-Suspicious feeling.
https://mobileskips.com.au/the-50-percent-rule-for-clutter#:~:text=The%2050%25%20rule%20for%20clutter%20is%20a%20straightforward%20yet%20powerful,more%20manageable%20and%20organized%20environment.
So, this is Australian, and it is a service that makes it extra easy to throw stuff away at scale. And they are producing articles with decluttering “rules” that include throwing away half of everything you are decluttering.
I mean, I was feeling a bit suspicious, but this is far more on the nose than I was expecting.
Part of the problem is that I so thoroughly enjoyed the last decluttering book that I went looking for more and found one in the vein of Positive Thinking / Growth Mindset and it is, not to put too fine a point on it, nauseating. It is so obvious how much this is a system of control. I went looking for decluttering as a system of control, found lots, all yay, control! But what I wanted was not that, but rather, oh, wait, why are we jumping into this thing that is intended to control us. So I straight up googled decluttering is bad for you and what I found next was hilarious.
