Implacable, Jack Campbell

walkitoutI got two pre-ordered new books on July 4; I have now read them both. When I _really_ want a book, I don’t wait to read it. Probably means something!
Anyway.
Geary and fleet are hanging out in Dancer space, trying to establish a diplomatic relationship. Geary and Desjani get to visit a Dancer inhabited planet, and spend a night and eat a meal. Turns out the big scary aliens are
SPOILERS RUN AWAY FROM THE WOLF SPIDERS aaaaauuuuuggggghhhhh
vegetarians. Very, very, very hilarious.
There continue to be some stupid-punny jokes, like the argument about the meaning and origin of the idiom, “throw someone under the bugs”. Ha ha ha ha.
Ahem.
One of the really nice things about reading Campbell/Hemry is how relationships are very deliberately built over the course of the story, often over the course of multiple books. Important interactions which determine whether or not a battle happens or how it turns out or whether war is averted etc. often turn on choices made months or even years earlier in brief encounters between the participants, or even relationships between one of the participants and someone close to another participant. Reputation in these books is now stars on a website. It is the stories told among not/less famous/important people about famous/important people they had a personal interaction or relationship with. Campbell/Hemry is relentless in depicting the importance of professionalism, courtesy and behaving with honor at all times. It is a beautiful thing, and may actually be the core appeal of these books/this author.
Oh, and I also love how people get so frustrated about other space-faring folks just won’t explain themselves clearly. There is so much about perspective, framework, experience etc. going on.
And lawyer joke! Possibly the best, subtlest lawyer joke of all time.
