Saturday: laundry and reading
Jun. 8th, 2024 04:05 pmI read _Ribbon Dance_, which was delightful, altho also a little sad, because it is dedicated to Steve who passed in February. I really loved how the relationship between Padi and Tekelia developed, and also how Padi is starting to understand her Gift, and how it is distinctly different from others … so far. Fun!
I did some laundry.
I helped A. with her history homework, which was effects of the Cold War on some country or countries other than the United States. She wanted to do Antarctica, but wondered if that counted as a country. I said, absolutely does not matter, let’s find out what happened in Antarctica because Cold War. And, ha! Amazing instincts for where the story is in this family! I would never have thought of Antarctica, but as soon as she said it, I was like, let’s do it! And, yeah, so, things were ramping up there, the usual UK / south american country nonsense, the US starting some shit, but pulling back out of concern wrt USSR and the usual inability to wrangle the UN. And then Ike and the ATS was devised under Eisenhower, including the first round of no nuke testing, demilitarization and an inspections regime. Who knew. That’s where it all started. I’m still stunned that I didn’t know any of this, but once again, everyone else I’ve asked didn’t know either. I’m learning so much.
ETA:
Also, samples! I read samples of Love at First Book by Jenn McKinlay, The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman and Murder Your Employer: the McMasters Guide to Homicide by Rupert Holmes. Of the three, the only one I’m tempted to continue is The Thursday Murder Club, and I’m not tempted enough.
ETAYA:
I read _Atlas Shagged_ by Fraser Sherman, who I saw on a panel at RavenCon back in April and also chatted with in author alley. Fun collection of short fiction. The mashup of Conan and Darcy was laugh out loud funny, and the magic and mayhem filled Wodehouse was awesome. The best, tho, was probably the Uneasy Lies the Head that Wears the Clown fiction-as-book-review. Will happily read more by Sherman.
