After taking a look at the seat map for our flight, I decided we would actually take our planned trip to Hilton Head. This was planned in the Before Times, and I expected it to be canceled, but the DVC opens today, altho our reservation starts tomorrow, so our first night will be in Savannah at a Residence Inn.
We drove to Logan, because I expected a very empty parking garage. It turned out to be so empty that there was space on level 4, and everything else is blocked off. This is so weird, I kind of do not know what to think or feel about it.
Most of the shops and places to get food and drink are closed. Security is empty of everyone but us and staff, as is bag drop.
I have never seen the airport this clean. I have never been on a plane as clean as the one we flew on. And it was not a new plane — the seat back screens are the old small ones. At least 1/4 of the rows are totally empty, and about the same number have only one person in them. The middle seats (with the exception of ours, and maybe one or two other rows, with groups flying together) are empty throughout the plane.
Upon arrival, we noted that the Savannah airport is also mostly empty, and largely closed. There was a line (of people from our flight) to pick up rental cars. I screwed up on the rental time frame (unsurprising — my JetBlue flight got moved from Tuesday to Monday, and I moved the rental but did not look closely at the pickup time and I set it two hours early), and the van I reserved was taken by someone earlier in the line. We wound up with a Jeep, which was kind of cool, actually, because I have never driven one, and R. had not driven one in decades.
White people are NOT wearing masks as consistently as Black in Savannah. It says something, altho I do not know that I could nail down what, other than that I definitely wind up hanging back further from the non-mask wearers than the mask-wearers. Heat is no excuse — it is high 60s when we arrive and feels almost chilly.
We found and checked into the Residence Inn with no problem. I had identified a dinner place for tonight and a lunch place for tomorrow a couple days ago. We went to Currents right when they opened and got a table on the patio. We were really hungry, because while we had snacks (service was a zippie bag with a small water bottle, a bag of chips, a bar, a napkin) on the plane, only A. had had a sandwich. I got a sushi roll and an order of chicken pad thai, and had a couple of really fantastic drinks. I ate all of the food, which was a lot. By the time we left, it was filling up a bit more, but tables were spaced out really well and there was a good breeze. I was glad we brought jackets.
If you are ever in Savannah, I highly recommend Currents. Great service, pleasant environment, fantastic drinks, excellent food, good choices for the kids.
ETA: T. tells me he totally forgot to pack shorts. Of course he did. That will be one more thing to figure out tomorrow.
