walkitout: (Default)
I took myself for a walk today.

I went to the grocery store, because T. has a cold and has been home sick a couple days (not just sending him in the way we did last time, in hopes we can avoid this thing getting really bad again); we were out of apple juice and orange juice. The horror! We are restocked. I bought french fries, chicken nuggets and tomatoes, too, while I was at it. Maybe I can not go back for a week or so.

It was A.’s half day, so I picked her up and took her to her swimming lesson. It went well. Nice to have some routine survive the chaos.

That story about Jeff Bezos saying, we need knee pads, and someone saying no, we need tables made the rounds, only that person got erased and replaced with “software engineer”, which, um, that is not how I would describe him. I mean, he is probably way smarter than I am, but no. Anyway. I could not remember who it was who suggested the table, so I poked around, found one of the many other versions of the story that included the name and then promptly wondered where he was now. You, too, can play the search engine game. What really got my attention, however, was when I was looking for him on FB, and I spotted that we had a number of mutual friends I remember from Amazon days — and one who was not at Amazon at the time or maybe ever. So I texted him saying, hey, did not know you knew him! Ultimate Frisbee, of course, is a component of the answer. Because. And had an amusing convo, including various Hey Whatever Happened To moments. For example, the person who got my email address at amazon after I left is now at BSquare! Wow! First, did not know it still existed. Second, whatever happened to the founder? He is over at Vizio. That made me wonder about other DEC C coworkers who left in the earlier round to Asymmetrix; one of them is now at mParticle. If I were still in Seattle, I would be getting in touch with people and suggesting lunch, just to pick their brains. The clients that mParticle brags about are amazing! I want to know what they are doing. Something complicated and amazing and fun, I am sure!

For suitable values of fun.

Meanwhile, the person responsible for the table idea (he invented tables at Amazon! Ok, sure) seems to be back at the Zon. Interesting! I often wonder where people wind up, when my last memory of them is retiring to motorcycle around the world and/or start a philanthropic organization. I mean, I am not where I was when I retired! Which is good, because I kept dating people who turned out to play Ultimate Frisbee, and that clearly had a limited run.
