M. came over and we went for our usual walk. It _looked_ bare and dry out, but we encountered some ice. Fine, we avoided it. But then I _thought_ a dark driveway was clear — actually it had a little bit of black ice on it. Down I went! Weirdest feeling. I have no visual memory of the fall (honestly, didn’t see the ice at all), but I vividly remember the feeling of the trip down, twisting to try to recover my balance then to fall on my side instead of square on my butt, and then impacting sequentially: flank, shoulder, back of the head. In my favor — there was little enough in my favor — my hood was thick and up, and under it I had a couple layers of scarf and cap. But wow, that is the hardest I have ever been hit on the head. Thanks a lot, gravity.

I immediately asked my walking partner if there had been any gap in me talking and she said no. So, reassuring! I told her I was going to get up, and if I failed, or acted weird in any way, she should call 911. I saw where my phone had fallen out of my coat pocket, unharmed, and put it back in my pocket before standing up.

We got in motion to continue on our walk / back to my house, and I called R. to come meet me. He used Find My Friends and offered to drive us the remaining yards back when he met us. I declined. He offered to take me to the ER, and I said let’s go inside and think about this for a bit. M. got her snack and went on her way. I looked up the guidelines on when to see a doc / go to the ER with a head injury. My event did not seem to match any of those guidelines. After further discussion, R. went back to work and I went to bed. He checked in on my by phone periodically. When T. got home, I gave him money for the sitter. R. picked up A., because I did not want to drive. I went to bed early. I binge watched some of the Marie Kondo Netflix series.

Don’t fall! This sucks. I turn 50 later this year, and I have never taken falls well, at any age. I hate falling. I wish I had put my ice bugs on. This is exactly why I own them, but I also dislike walking on bare pavement with them because it feels weird. Better that than falling!
