furnaces, futher trashy reading
Sep. 26th, 2007 03:35 pmI now know where both furnaces are. EnergyNorth replaced a couple regulators as ours were apparently quite aged.
This took the guy a couple hours. I anticipate a bill.
_The Unsung Hero_ by Suzanne Brockmann is book one in one of her open-ended series about SEALS. These would be romance novels, btw. I had been avoiding Brockmann for a while, but finally a good friend whose judgment I trust said what she'd read was really entertaining and not to worry about the plethora of cliches as they were handled in a fresh and effective way. After reading _The Unsung Hero_, I'm inclined to agree; I promptly ordered several more from Amazon.
The structure is a bit more complicated than a lot of romances. Three interweaving romances (the primary between a couple of thirty-somethings, a secondary triangle involving flashbacks to WWII, another secondary between an 18 year old and someone in college, presumably within a year or so of her in age), a substantive suspense plot, major medical problems, a couple of deaths and dysfunctional families give this novel some depth. Despite all that, a humane sense of humor pervades.
Tertiary characters from this novel will appear in later novels in the series. I'm looking forward to it.
_For Her Pleasure_ by Maya Banks exposes a bit more of the Banks formula and I have to say, it's kinda creepy. I like the poly/menage. I don't much care for the BDSM stuff. I _really_ don't like the rape subthemes, altho at least the rapists are clearly defined as BAD. Not saying I won't continue to read Banks (because books/stories that actually develop a poly relationship with that much sex aren't exactly thick upon the ground), but I could wish that her inspiration for the sex scenes used fewer porn movie cliches.
Currently reading: _Hidden Truth_ (a bit stalled on that because of all the other choices), _Overtreated: Why Too Much Medicine Is Making Us Sicker and Poorer_ by Shannon Brownlee, the Singular/Plural issue of Bitch magazine and _Essentials of Children's Literature_. At least this way, I don't have to move the books around. Anywhere I sit down, there's something to pick up. ;-)
