[personal profile] walkitout
Historical romance, Victorian London. Our heroine is forced to pretend suicide and entirely change her identity and way of life after killing a man who is attempting to rape and murder her. In her new life, as paid companion to a woman writing her memoirs, she uses that woman's access to "Polite Society" to support her efforts to investigate and expose Bad Behavior by the upper classes. She makes a number of friends along the way and a career as a journalist.

But, because this is Krentz, she also does some slightly dippy/risky things and encounters Our Hero, who is similarly engaged in investigating Bad Behavior. Again, being Krentz, she insists they become partners and antics ensue. In her new identity, Our Heroine is a widow, but as in other Quick novels, she isn't _really_ and in fact is a virgin, leading to much consternation when Our Hero discovers this. Er. I did _not_ write "the hard way". I swear.

Anyway. Cheap fun, when you get it at the library. If this is the kind of thing you like, you'll like it. As usual, Krentz has incorporated a substantial amount of detailed historical background research. Altho, having just read some Chase novels, and having read Schone and _Phyllida_, I'm now feeling like I keep reading historical romances with brothels in them which cater to unusual tastes. What a range in the way they are presented! Most/many of them offer the option of paying extra to see what the other clients are getting up to. (Er.) This particular entry actually follows one of the workers as she makes her escape from the brothel to a safe house for women who need a new life.
