Reminds me to ask, do you like Oliver Sacks? I've just been reading Hallucinations, and while he doesn't touch on (sorry) the tickling thing, there's lots of other interesting stuff in there. One of the things he points out is that the social stigma of hallucinations is so huge that it's often hard to get people to talk about them, as they're afraid they'll get called crazy (especially for auditory hallucinations, "hearing voices" in even the most minor way being a thing that used to get you locked up right quick).

I can't tickle myself, at least not to the point of involuntary laughter. But I can tickle my kids without touching them, just by waggling my fingers at them and threatening.
