walkitoutIn the Before Times, if you got a message from DHL saying you owed duty on something, it was always a fraud. But in the today times, maybe it’s not?
I got a message at 7 ish in the morning saying I owed something on a DHL shipment. I have been ordering things that arrive from overseas, and I have had to pay duty on a variety of things over the last several months. But I wasn’t expecting to have to do that again — everything had already arrived. I mean, not everything, but everything that I was told to watch for and pay duty on, sure.
I did eventually match the tracking number up to an order placed through etsy, with a shop nominally in New York. But the item was unsurprisingly coming from India (silk curtains for a window in the new house). The seller, however, had NOT told me to anticipate paying duty. So this was a surprise. I was about to pay it when I noticed it was going to send the receipt to shopname.uk, and then I was like, you know, go ask them first.
So I asked, using the message feature on etsy, and they responded promptly to my question about whether I was going to be paying that or they were, and they said they were paying it. Which is why they did not tell me ahead of time to watch for it, the way two other sellers had (rugs). Also, good news. I had picked that seller because they had US-side operations and higher prices, so I figured that would represent me not having to figure out all this sketchy stuff, and I am happy that is still working.
Not a fraud, and not a tax I will have to pay over and above what I am already paying. So, good news!
