My regular readers know that I’ve been doing some shopping for furnishings for a house we are having built. There is a counter/bar at that house, so we need barstools. My husband’s leg from the bottom of his foot to his knee is unusually short (if it were a normal length, he’d be 1-2” taller, and that would match his wingspan, so this really is where the weird is). As a practical matter, that means that the place where one rests one foot on a barstool when you can’t rest your foot on the ground is generally uncomfortably low for him. He had a DVT incident last years so I am extremely motivated to take this issue very seriously. Also, the equivalent for me is unusually long, so I can’t just make all the bar stools have stretchers at the correct location for him. Finally, I want a back on the barstool, so I can’t just get a square barstool and have some of the stretchers be one height and others a different height.
Obviously, we didn’t _start out_ with this specification. We started out by trying a bunch of barstools, arguing about it, and then working out in some detail the problem and why various solutions were not workable. I eventually hit upon the idea of finding a custom bar stool maker on a place like etsy, having a sample made for him, and if the quality was good, have the rest made “normally” (because normally is fine for me).
The test stool has been in our basement for a while, because it worked out great, and we’ve been waiting for the others to arrive. With that backstory in mind, it makes perfect sense that an Estes tracking update would be the good news that the stools are on their way and about to arrive. But of course, it’s never that simple with me. No, I was already trying to figure out what was going on with the DHL request for duty payment (see earlier post — that was about some curtains). Once that was squared away, I had to spend some time thinking about what this Estes thing could possibly be _without clicking on any links first_. Eventually, I hit upon the barstools, and that made me courageous enough to click on the link in the text and indeed, the source for the shipment is correct for the barstools. The etsy purchase information in this case did not include tracking (it did for the curtains, which was helpful).
I find it gobsmacking that there can exist a shipping company that sends me updates on a package that I’ve never heard of. Mostly because I listen to The New Warehouse on the regular and thus erroneously believe I am Up To The Second up to date on logistics, but obviously that is not possible there is always more to learn.
Not a fraud. Just a delivery service I did not previously know about.
ETA:
In other shopping news, 2 of the 3 purple corundum beads 10 mm arrived and they are lovely. Also, the griffin silk with attached needle for beading has arrived. Assuming the 3rd bead arrives next week, I’m going to make sure I can actually assemble and knot the beads. If that works, I’ll be reaching out to the seller to order the rest of the beads for the project. I keep asking myself if this particular project is actually a good idea — especially given that other efforts in this project led to the fraud event — but I keep coming back to yeah. Yeah it’s really worth it.
Oh, and PayPal finally found in my favor. On balance, it didn’t take that long or require that much effort, altho it felt like a long time and a lot of effort. It’s clear they have a fairly sclerotic set of rules and you basically have to contort your situation to fit those rules and the humans at the call center will help you do that if you are nice to them and call within the narrow-ish hours that they are open. Which is par for the course for banking, so I guess not a surprise.
