After discussing all the things with R., and getting out a stepladder and doing some measuring, I have concluded that we can put flushmounts in the current can locations next to the door to the attic and also above the treadmill (these are controlled by the same light switch). I ordered conversion kits for the cans from the Zon, and the quoizel from an online lighting store that had a deal on them. The Zon used to carry these lights with interestingly mixed reviews — a bunch of reviewers were convinced these were resin, and others were very convinced they were glass. I’m sure they are both right — this is what happens when you have the same product sourced by very different factories and the specifications are inadequately detailed. There was broad agreement that the product was beautiful and worth keeping even if resin, and people who complained about the resin were basically just frosty about the price. I mostly don’t care which I get, and the online store I picked had a better price than what it was going for over on the Zon when they used to carry it so this will be a mild adventure. Things should start arriving around Wednesday. With my luck, the weather will warm up and I won’t need to use the treadmill again until next January. Which is a completely fine outcome from my perspective.

I was going to get either the HF Flora or HF Bento, which we have picked for a bunch of places in the new house. R. didn’t care too much, other than preferring the Bento to the Flora. I couldn’t match the metal on the Bento to the brushed nickel on the door handles, so I went looking for alternatives without much enthusiasm. When I stumbled across the Quoizel Asheville, I was like, I bet he’ll love this one (yeah, it doesn’t match the handles either, but it does match a lot of other lighting we have around the house, because R. loves this kind of lamp and I’m 100% fine with it). And he did.

I’m feeling pretty good about this. He’s gonna do some serious complaining when he installs the can conversion kit, if the reviews are anything to go by, so I’ll try to make sure that happens when there isn’t a lot else going on in the house.

Once this is done, the remaining environmental problem in the area (I mean other than the bookcases loaded with crap) is remembering to put the heat on hold for the duration of treadmill time. I’m thinking maybe post a sign on the treadmill to remind myself at the beginning?

ETA: sign on treadmill posted! Fingers crossed. It’s above freezing today, so Murphy is On Board with This Plan. I also found the small Philips lights that are often unplugged and languishing somewhere, but when plugged in, they invariably cause some kind of conflict with one of the kids (or, sometimes, me). I have no idea why these lights work so poorly for us and I don’t really care anymore. They are going off into the big world for future adventures with someone who will hopefully love them or at least learn useful things by experimenting with them. I’ve started the conversation with A. about potentially de-accessioning some of the toys stored in the hall near the treadmill, in hopes we can reduce what is on the bookshelves far enough to get rid of at least one entirely.
