We drove A. to Fusion, then out to Florence, then back to Fusion. We were late, but A. still wasn’t downstairs so we walked over to Jersey Mike’s and she joined us there for sandwiches. I brought the apple crisp to Florence with us, but by 5 pm we were all very hungry. It was yum. I may go back tomorrow to get a sandwich for on the way to therapy.

We went home, unpacked the car (the Yes We Vibe boots worked great in the mud), and I caught up on email and so forth. I did not get a walk today, but R. did get an indoor ride, which is nice. I made myself a blueberry pancake. It was also very yummy, and I had a couple mandarins later. A. took a shower. I had a nice long phone chat with A. All in all, a very pleasant day, possibly because I drove to and from Fusion, but R. did all the rest of the driving, so I never had to sit in the backseat but I also completely avoided all arguments.

I’m thinking about putting together a list of Walkitout Principles of Design:

Don’t try to match things exactly. Opt for clear contrast instead.

If you had to do it, make it look like you did it on purpose.

The larger the space you are working with, the more important it is to limit colors and repeat patterns and other themes (and also, the smaller the space you are working with, the more important it is to cram as much uniqueness in there as you can stand).

If you’re not sure about pattern, but you know you need some, opt for medium density (not very small and not very large).

Avoid large fields of a single color. They always find a way to show stains and dirt.

Develop a personal color / pattern, so that when you have a lot of choices in front of you that are difficult to choose between, you can just pick that one. Over time, it’ll produce thematic cohesion in your environment, wardrobe, etc. It should NOT be a single solid neutral, or two solid neutrals. Those have been overdone already.

Identify what chairs you love and what chairs you hate and why. Make sure you can recognize them before you order custom with delivery in more than 8 weeks.

If you hate something, try to understand in some detail how you hate it. For example, a lot of people hate all non-incandescent lights, but they haven’t necessarily explored the space, or, they haven’t made it beyond “they flicker”, and so they don’t realize there are non-incandescent lights that don’t flicker, and thus don’t (yet) know whether there are other issues or not (there can be — you can have no flicker low CRI and that might be a problem for you and it might not, and you won’t know until to get past the first problem). This seems like a lot of work, but generally speaking, hatred of a specific thing with no reason is concealing a bunch of complexity that will then pop up in other seemingly unrelated places. If you get a really detailed sense of how you hate something, you can start to spot it in unexpected places, before it disables you again.

Try to avoid long-term commitments to things that are really exciting. Exciting can turn on you. Calm appeal almost never does.

Fill what’s empty. Empty what’s full. Scratch where it itches.

ETA: Apparently, Amazon is now working with Hyundai dealerships to sell new Hyundai cars. Financing is available, but you can also pay without financing; they take a $500 deposit and then you either cashier’s check or wire transfer, as near as I can tell.
