I drove out to South Deerfield pretty early for a 10 am meeting with someone about a couple kitchens’ worth of cabinets. Turns out when the builder was originally bidding this project, they had this company do a pricing round, so they’d already seen the plans. Then we went down a confusing Not Really a Path Per Se with a different millwork provider and now we’re back to these people. So far, loving these people.

Nice meeting. They read what I sent them, and they set up what I asked for in their software and we discussed various issues and I was gently reminded about the full overlay plus tight spacing problem in corners so we’re doing inset instead. Answered a question about whether we want a rail between drawers, which apparently is optional with inset, and it looks really cool without so that’s what we’re doing there (in a three drawer stack, the three drawers are collectively inset, rather than individually. Yeah, that explanation probably helped not at all).

Then it was over to Florence for the MEPFP and OAC. Everything went very nicely.

In between, A. (friend in Cali, not my daughter) called, because she was feeling significant distress around a decision on her project, so we spent ten minutes while I was driving from South Deerfield to Florence talking that through. Later, we got to have our usual, leisurely Tuesday phone call in two parts, one on the drive home, and one later in the evening. Very fun! I dug out the Vlisco fabric I already own that is intended to be a duvet cover and we discussed how that might integrate into my future planned bedroom.

Also, today I learned that Someone (who was not me) decided to drive up to the site (maybe over the weekend) and did not do the checkin procedure. J. (Project manager) saw the alert on the security video and it was called in and _two_ patrol cars rolled out to have a little conversation with someone. This is the _second_ story I’ve heard of J. calling the cops on someone who was doing a dropin (one was on her own security system at her own house, as an example of a security system working /being effective).

This is funny, because it is all very white people on white people nonsense (it would NOT be funny in other circumstances!). It is also very much in support of my theory that the vast majority of examples of Here’s How My Security System Is Useful / Effective turn out to be I Called the Cops on a Friend / Family Member stories. If you are a person who believes in handling their own security via the ownership of certain tools, let me just say, make sure you never make these kinds of mistakes.

Also! I learned that when those high sill height windows were operable, the mechanism was located a foot above the sill, so the one in Pink World bathroom would have been over 9’ off the ground. I’m not sure even a 3 step stepladder would be enough for that. And yes, the architect did imagine that this might be operated to reduce humidity in the bathroom (do we have an amazing ERV and crazy HVAC all over this house? Why yes! Yes we do. We have a fucking indoor pool on the same level of this house). J. said something about how a permanently installed stair up the wall (something I also suggested) would look weird, and I was like, oh, I could make that look amazing! And she said, I bet you could Willy Wonka it, and yep, that had popped into my head, too. I wasn’t seriously going to do it — it was mostly to illustrate how unhinged those operable windows were (again, no longer operable!).

I woke up in the middle of the night thinking, oh, swinging door is gonna interact negatively with oven doors. So we’ll be extending the wall by the oven door a bit and adjusting cabinetry further. Looks like I’ll be getting my Reception side drawers!

A couple weeks ago, the architect was supposed to work on getting us a clear coat tread sample showing that it would be safely non-slip. That never happened, and last week I worked to more clearly articulate that I didn’t like the clear coat idea, partly because it could fail silently (by wearing off) and partly because of a sort of inchoate fear that I now recognize as It Can’t Just Be Safe If It Still Looks Terrifying. It has to communicate safety. So we’re talking about a visible, tangible railing on both sides of the window walled corridors, since they are too narrow to line with benches or display furniture or whatever.
