I forgot there was an OAC meeting (because it’s Monday!) but it was virtual, short, and R. decided to be primary on this one, altho in the event I was also there for the whole thing AND I got A. to school on time.

On the way to Fusion, we talked about the late homework assignment. It was a translation exercise, and we talked about what it was like to take a pet dog to a dog park in the morning. It’s hard to translate something about a topic you’ve never had any experience with. Also, it’s just hard to translate things.

I went through email and did a bunch of ProxyVote voting. I also deleted a bunch of stuff. I watched a trailer for the Mufasa movie coming out in December, which I was like, hunh, do I really want to go see this, but then I saw that Beyonce and Blue Ivy were listed and so was Miranda and I’m okay, I’m game, something to do in early January, probably, because I’ll probably be busy in December. I also watched a five minute video about Mario land at Epic. That looks like fun, actually.

I’ll be heading out on a walk soon, probably. I am trying to have as calm and quiet a day as I can possibly manage, because I just don’t have enough of those. Which is weird, honestly.

ETA:

The walk was good, and then I was talking to M. about the weird comparisons floating around about 1968 and this year’s election. I always forget how much of the vote George Wallace got in 1968.

Altho an even better question is, how on earth did Goldwater get the 1964 nomination anyway, and the answer to that is apparently California.

Fillmore’s appearance on that list also surprised me — if I knew about his presence on the ballot in 1856, I apparently completely forgot about it.

I got a second, 3 mile walk, later in the day. It got warm! I picked up A. It’s really great reading the daily updates from the various teachers. The study skills teacher is _absolutely_ making a meaningful difference. It’s slow, but she’s really engaging with A.’s process and trying to puzzle out a way to preserve all A.’s curiosity and energy, but help direct it more … directly towards the goal. Which is amazing. No one has ever tried to do this for her. I mean, I kinda do, but I’m terrible at teaching this because I’m not all that great at it myself; I tend to be all over the place until the various threads converge. And when they don’t, it’s bad. Having more control over this process would be really great for me, so I sure hope that T. (the teacher) has some helpful ideas.

R. cooked the chicken and had dinner ready for A. when we got home, which was pretty awesome. I made blondies, and I also made banana muffins, since we had a couple of extremely ripe bananas. Yum!

I had a phone conversation with my sister; the phone arrived, but she’s kinda wrung out because she’s working a lot of hours again so she’s charging it and will transfer stuff over tomorrow.

I had a phone conversation with J. while on the walk. That was fun, and I got her perspective on the digital textbooks she has encountered while doing classes online. It’s nice to get some perspective on the experience! It’s also making clear to me that one of the holdups on transitioning from paper textbooks to digital textbooks is the same kind of thing that help up the adoption / full use of workbooks when I was a kid. It’s really easy for costs to get lost. So a paper textbook that all the teachers are scanning pages from (cost in their time, and the difficulty of doing it well, and then the assignments are in google slides or docs or whatever) seems cheaper than a digital textbook (where the assessments are automated, so in addition to NOT having the hassle of scanning, the annoyance of all the grading is gone, too AND you get really detailed, informative feedback to the instructor about what people are struggling with).
