Sunday: in which we return home
Apr. 28th, 2024 11:00 pmWe got up, packed up, loaded up the car and then went to a panel about weird things encountered while researching. It was pretty good, and there was a very prolific author there who sets horror in places like Myrtle Beach and other touristic destinations. She researches unsolved crimes, weird lore, serial killers, etc., imposes a supernatural explanation and then has her characters do their thing. Nice system — good example of conscious reuse, in this case, the structure of planning, outlining, writing the books; she does one a month, apparently, and spends 2-4 days on outlining/research.
I also learned about Shoemaker’s _Making Story Models_ (I bought it while sitting in the room), which seems hilarious apropos for me to read.
We tried going to the science bloopers thing, but it wasn’t particularly great and we bailed out. We had lunch at Kitchen 33 and Bakery, which I’d stumbled across on google maps and then looked at the web page and felt compelled to check it out. The Oyster po’boy was great, and the service was excellent. My sister had the flounder, also good, and A. liked her grilled chicken sandwich. The fries were that greasy-satisfying type that you have to be in the mood for. The onion rings were fantastic. Everyone seemed happy.
After that, we split up, and my sister headed home and we headed to the airport to return the rental car and hang out until our flight left on time and got back a little early. R. picked us up. A bunch of stuff had arrived in my absence, so that was fun, and I also had to do laundry because some of A.’s shorts no longer fit so her options are pretty limited.
It was a good trip, and I’d happily go back to Richmond, or do more cons elsewhere with or without any of this group. Very low on drama, and low-key enjoyable hanging out.
