We got going later than hoped for. We walked around the church in Achlum, but wherever I took the grave pictures it was not here. Not sure how to figure that out, either, but I would imagine I will think of something. I should pull out the notebook from that trip and transcribe it into my blog or onto my website or something?
Anyway. I was thinking I would take pictures of the Achlum stones, because I now recognize tons of the last names, more than Ali probably ever did, since we have so much more of the stamboom figured based on the civil registry information. T. kept asking questions and it was confusing and eventually I just gave up. I can and probably will return, independent of whether Ali is still alive. I like Fryslan, and the food is good and daytripping all over here for a week would be fantastic and I can probably do that without T. in a few years. Soon enough to track down graves all over the place. Belatedly, I realized and told him, hey, everyone buried in Achlum, except possibly some more recent ones, is someone related to me through my dad. He was kinda stunned. For me, tho, the area is so much more than just where Simon was born. It is also where Menno Simons was born and died.
Anyway. We went over to Franeker and sat down in the Grand Cafe de Doelen, where from 11 - noon they have coffee and pastries. So we did. R. had the best choice with the oranjekoek. T. had the cheesecake and A. had the applegebak. I had koffie and it was delightful.
After that, we got the last 4 tickets for the noon entry to the planetarium. We bought Frisian souvenirs including Friesche Suikerbood Likorette, Wielinga & De Campen, distilled locally. We got samples; it is good. I bought a second one and had it wrapped for Ali. Is it a gift? is what reminded me, hey, we could do that. I also bought a ball cape that is very cute with Frys symbols and so forth.
Then we did the planetarium. Obviously, the room has not changed at all for hundreds of years, including my first visit in 2002 or R.’s first visit in 2004. However, it became part of the treasure chest then “canon” of the Netherlands and grew a massive array of other exhibit and explanations of the solar system and of other sundials and efforts to measure and model things in the night sky. It is really good, but you must buy timed tickets to get in, and it is max 30 in the planetarium. Some Germans told us that may be about to become a UNESCO World Heritage site, and that is absolutely appropriate and also this is going to be an impossible experience to have in a few years, cruise ship or no cruise ship. Franeker is about to become Planetarium Village. So. Strange.
We went to visit A. one last time. She skipped her Sunday coffee meetup and slept, so she was lively! She had a two volume contemporary frisian encyclopedia from the early-mid 1970s and it was a challenge finding the Planetarium in it, because it is contemporary not historical. It will suck getting it home, as it is heavy, but I am glad to have it.
T. went and bought A.’s breakfast pastry and got us coins for the laundry. R. started the laundry. Dinner will be at Picnickers in a bit.
Picknickers was fantastic, altho I do not think T. liked his carbonara very much. He got a LOT of milk products today. I really hope he does not regret it. He did take a lot of lactase with it all so fingers crossed. A. thought she did not like the chicken drumstick, but it turned out she did not like the ketchup. She got the marrow out of the chicken drumstick. R. says he used to do that.
Tomorrow, we switch to Efteling Bosrijk. Very exciting! No plane, and we just need to get out before 10, so I am not too concerned.
