Long and complex travel day
Aug. 4th, 2023 11:00 pmWe got up insanely early, and finished packing up, ate a little and then drove to Leeds Bradford. Every time we program the rental car return, we get a really screwy route from google maps. I do not know why. But we got there, albeit at least 45 minutes later than we had planned. Oh well!
We got the bus from the rental car centre to the terminal, stopped at the bathrooms and a Starbucks. Vegan options! Tasty! We got on the flight, and arrived a bit early. No problems. The bathrooms again, and then picked up the Europacar rental car. I drove this time. R. had driven over an hour and a half on the other side of the road. No problems with the routing to Heerenveen, and we got in early enough to have a visit with my cousin A. She is definitely older, but still very sharp and it was great to meet J.’s younger brother’s daughter Jytske.
We checked into Havenresort Terherne and got lunch at Cafe ‘t Far. It was good, but we are still struggling to figure out the order and payment idioms. We have been correctly asking whether we need to be seated or pick our own seats, and orders are taken at the table but payment occurs at a location near but not at the bar. Which is fine! Familiar from my childhood, but I have not done that in a while, so we sat around waiting for a bit before R. went and asked.
Supermarkt Feijen was closed already, so R. and I drove over to Joure to go to an AH — not the closest as the crow flies, but the most direct and fastest drive. AH only takes debit, so we paid with cash. Restaurants have all been taking credit, so it will probably work out.
That was a wicked long day and very complicated.
