Wednesday: back to Din Tai Fung, shopping
Jul. 5th, 2023 11:00 pmA. and I drove to A La Mode on Phinney Ridge. I got her apple crumb pie and I got a vegan marionberry.
We then drove and parked (paybyphone, so convenient) elsewhere in Fremont (I know, right? But it was hot, and we were going to buy things). We bought some birthday cards and some other things at Portage Bay Goods. T. had bought a postcard there earlier and saw that there were birthday cards. I bought a vegan tiramisu at Lazy Cow (no sourdough, alas — I would have brought it home on the plane).
We had pie for lunch. It was amazing. Well, I had part of the slice I got for myself, because I accidentally ate all of the tiramisu. I’d planned to save some for R., so he could tell me if it was legit, but it was sooooo good.
We went to Din Tai Fung, bringing the cards, some of the purchased objects and ourselves. We tried to get the timer started, but they wouldn’t until everyone was there, and the aunt of the birthday boy was still in Edmonds. In the end, once there were 8 of us, we started the clock, and we snuck the aunt into our table and stole a chair from the next table over. They have Rules at Din Tai Fung that are annoying and understandable while also unusual. Cheating seemed like the right strategy. It was good! Worked out to almost exactly $50/person and leftovers went home with the birthday family.
