I took A. to Mass Moca.
I feel like that Split Rock outside may be the best part of the place. It is so amazing. You just cannot see the split at all driving along —- or walking along — the street until you are right on top of it. The poles are positioned Just So, and the lights makes you think the gap is just a shadow until you are directly opposite the gap. Absolutely perfect in every way, and perfectly position to remind people _exiting_ Mass Moca that perspective matters even when we don’t realize it matters.
A. really struggled with a lot of things. However, roller coaster worked anyway. First, we thought we’d missed the hourly kinetic part of the display, but it turned out we had not missed it. So we saw a young asian woman ride the cart down the metal rail (? It’s box shaped so I don’t really know what to call it). A. finally let go her cognitive dissonance with seeing neon light on wood (easily the least weird thing of the whole work) to as, “But who gets to decide who can ride it?” And I’m like, wow. That art work caused A., who was confused as fuck about the whole thing and only partially absorbed my summary of the artist, the theme of the work, etc. because she felt like neon shouldn’t be on wood but on metal, to ask -precisely- the correct question. Beautiful.
The super dark gallery with the saturated orange rectangle in it was a really interesting experience that we both got a lot out of. We also liked the holograms.
We went up to Bennington and had lunch at Village Garage Distillery and I bought all three bottles after having the flight. The whisky is just the bourbon, but using the barrels a second time. The rye is great, too.
Then we were going to walk over to the chocolate shop (we did, and we bought chocolate), but there was a street fair in the way, so we also bought an apple cider donut and some caramel corn. The street fair was a street fair, so this was pretty overwhelming for A.
R. and I went over to Freight Yard for dinner. It was good — I had the clam strips which came with fries and a salad, and I brought the fries and an added grilled cheese with chips back to the hotel for A.
