Pfizer and Moderna data both clearly show that their vaccines start providing meaningful protection 10-14 days after the first dose, weeks before the second dose.
We should start trials that give a live first dose and a placebo second dose ASAP. If a single dose provides meaningful AND even somewhat durable protection, this would effectively double the rate at which we could deploy the vaccines we already have (reserving two dose regiments for the elderly, who probably really need two doses to have effective protection).
