On Friday, A. and I spent time writing an explanation of the school cancelation. On Saturday, at Vic’s, T. had a lot of questions that came down to understanding why were we social distancing. I used what A. and I wrote (I read a bunch of it out loud to him) to help explain how what we were doing would slow the virus from spreading, and how slowing the virus would allow hospitals to be able to keep helping the really sick people. It seemed to answer the questions very effectively. That made me happy!

Last night, I unpacked Lego 75257, a Lego Millenium Falcon (1351 pieces). I set it up on the dining room table (all the bags lines up in numerical order, got out the container of all the lego tools). We are fully prepared to defeat boredom! Also, there is a new Teen Titans Go episode for A.

We would normally be going to brunch in an hour and a half. However, A. decided today that she did not feel like going to brunch. I must say, by making sure the kids fully understood what this whole social distancing thing was all about, the scale of conflict to actually make it happen has really shrunk down to nothing. Sort of awesome!

I am hoping to do a bunch of decluttering this week. I already signed the IEP for A. and will put it in the mail tomorrow. And I think we have uploaded all the documents for the refi on the mortgage. It is not like there is anything else that needs to be done around here. Maybe I will make some coffee cake.

ETA:

I made the coffee cake; half of it is already gone and I swear it was not mostly me eating it. M. came by and we went for a walk. She had some coffee cake. A. had some coffee cake. So did R. and I. I decided that I should cook the collards before they turned yellow. I really liked the ginger walnut quinoa chickpea chard soup from sun basket last week, so I did a version of that. It made a nice late lunch. For dinner I had an omelet with kale and mushrooms and the rest of the roasted sweet potatoes and parsnips and bell pepper. I threw out some rancid brown rice (partial, small package, so, some consolation there). The open package of black rice was fine, and I had coconut milk, so I made black rice pudding. Then, in a fit of Let Us Go Through Packages, I made jackfruit chili (box of jackfruit, tetra pack of cannellini beans, tetra pack of strained tomatoes, a bunch of dried peppers from the pantry, spices, bacon fat, the last of the chicken from a while ago). And I cooked some white rice — the stuff we found in the bin in the garage — to go with.

The sitter texted and said after a lot of thinking she was going to stay home this week. Sensible! I would in her position. Gadding about town with my son is a lot less fun if you are thinking in terms of pandemic and you cannot really pretend it is not happening when all the restaurants are closed.

Lots of people out for walks today. If we all eat beans and get extra walks, just think how healthy we will all be in a week!

ETAYA: Oh, and A. and I had a nice FaceTime with her grandma and we got to see her beautiful garden!! Lots of things growing, pretty flowers, good things to eat now and in the future. Later, T. had a FaceTime with her.

ETA still more: Baker closed restaurants and limited gatherings to 25 and under. Take out and delivery still allowed. CDC recommending no gatherings greater than 50 for 8 weeks. I cannot make sense of that one. They were just critiquing states and localities for closing schools — and now they want no gatherings bigger than 50. Makes you wonder if they know what school involves.

I am also a little confused about the 8 weeks number. If these measures work, we should have dropped completely to the floor in well under that number. And we cannot really restart without extensive availability of tests. It seems to me like it should either be, no gatherings of more than 50 until we have tests. But, you know, the entire top three layers at CDC is some combination of evil and stupid right now, so what did I expect.
