That is not a universal we — that is a family we. I know lots of people routinely lose things forever, and I have mixed feelings about them, and validate whatever feelings they might have towards the things that have exited their lives over the years without conscious intention.

I left a hat once at the psychologist’s office. We do not go there very often — only for diagnosis, not for therapy — so I figured it was gone for good. But when I was back again a couple years later with the other kid, there my hat was, hanging from the coat rack where I had left it. I had replaced it in the meantime, but stored it. Recently, I went through my hats, saw the duplicate, noticed how worn and discolored the inner band was, and sent it on its way with gratitude for the assistance it had given me over the years, and this story, which says so much about how regular I am in my habits.

A diaper backpack went missing some years ago. It eventually turned up about 3 or 3 and a half years later. We had left it at the stable at the horse, it had been moved and it took a long time to reconnect it with us. I emptied it out, threw away things that needed to be thrown away, vacuumed it out and put it in the basement. Today, I was down in the basement (probably another 4 years further along in life) and noticed it, along with a Sherpani hydration pack I used when bicycling the Nashoba river trail before the kids were born. I vacuumed it out some more, and thought about running it through the washing machine, but ultimately put it in a bag with the Sherpani and have put it out on the shelf in the garage to go to Savers. It is a great backpack (Hedgren) but I have other backpacks. A lot of other backpacks.

During the same trip to the basement, I got out a couple silk items (a tank top and a dress) from a trip to Hawaii. The dress is still too long for A., but the top will layer nicely with some thin shirts she has. The colors are very pretty, and ones that she likes a lot.

I also finally tracked down things in the camping gear I had been looking for: knife fork and spoon, a pack towel that I suspect might be R.’s, but which I will repurpose if he does not mind. I also found a very light weight daypack that I am going to see if I ever use. If I don’t, it will go to Savers, too. I found still more hydration packs in there, and also the cross country ski / hiking poles.

I did not find my water proof panniers. Still wondering about those. It is possible I sent them off to Savers, but suspect they will turn up, some time after the new, purple (!!!) water proof panniers show up from Holland Bike Shop.
