Departure Day to Jackson, WY
Jun. 25th, 2018 11:00 pmToday, we got up at oh dark thirty (actually, 3 a.m., but you get the general idea) to go to the airport. We had a 6ish a.m. departure from Boston to Salt Lake City, a brief layover (long enough to get Smashburgers, and then get more Smashburgers when the first ones had issues like cheese. No waste — other people in the group decided they’d like the first round and the second round was made correctly). I approve of Smashburger, despite the error — they are tasty.
Leg 2 was Salt Lake City to Jackson, where I have never been. It is a very small airport, but ludicrously nice. You are in the national park as soon as you land.
We went to Jackson Whole Grocery, which is a “hybrid”: mostly natural foods, but if you really want Hershey bars, m&ms and other things (like Jet Puff marshmallow — do you sense a theme here?) you can get them at just the one store. The owner works super hard and is very helpful. One of Delta’s flight attendants overheard our convo at the airport while waiting for the minivan from Enterprise and tried to convince us to go to Smith’s or Albertson’s. She was presumably trying to be helpful, but honestly, fuck that advice. Go to Jackson Whole Grocery. It’s better. It is worth the (extra) money. Also, great selection at the in-store liquor store: I got Colter’s Run and Del Professore vermouth (white). I think R. got some beer. I had the presence of mind to arrive with a list, which is a good thing, because I was pretty punchy by that point. The long leg did produce a non-dairy vegetarian meal for me, and kids’ meals for the kids (cheerios, juice and a banana, basically).
Jackson Hole has a large section of town which is like Whistler or similar: insanely expensive looking retail, themed, and you can’t really call it kitschy because the quality is too high. We didn’t do any other shopping, however.
We had dinner at the lodge — in the bar, because they were not seating in the dining room and none of us felt like sitting in full sunlight and there were no deck tables with full shade. Food and drinks were awesome. Things like pulled jackfruit on the menu. Which is good, because we’ll be eating a lot of our meals there.
