I've been working my way back my maternal grandmother's line, and have found an immigrant from the Netherlands in 1665 -- and Rowland was only about 15 or so at the time. Quite startling!

I would be a _whole_ lot more excited about this, except.

Genealogical data at that point in time is derived from things like wills and land records and similar. There are marriage records, as well. And one of the chunks of this puzzle involves a will, in which Rowland (the son of the above named Rowland) leaves Absalom (and these are all direct ancestors, mind you) a slave.

I can't get even remotely excited about that. I can only feel very sad.
