Whitby is pronounced like Whidbey
Jul. 30th, 2023 11:00 pmI got up around 8, hoping to get to a market before the kids waking up but I was lazy and there was tea, coffee, some grapes, carrots and even celery, crackers, some date bars and a bit of granola left from home. I had chocolate from Logan. I thought we could probably get breakfast out of all that, especially since there were double chocolate cookies (biscuits) on the table as a welcome gift with bottles of beer or cider or whatever. It seems to be working. Today, we are going to drive up to Whitby with my cousins. I looked Whitby (which is pronounced exactly like Whidbey, for my PacNW friends) up in google and I hope to have a lovely time, even if the weather is somewhat cool, cloudy with a little rain this morning.
I had the small cod fish and chips at Mister Chips by the Beach.
I bought a vegan croissant at The cornish bakery for myself, and 3 chocolate croissants for everyone else.
A. and I looked at some jewelry, and I bought a jet bracelet at Robert and Victoria. I did not look in all the jewelry shops selling locally collected jet; there are a lot of them! Jet is surprisingly light.
Several people got soft serve ice cream with sprinkles.
We drove to Robin Hood’s Bay. On the way there, I saw that Whitby has a brewery and a distillery. Missed opportunities! Oh well! A. was pretty tired, so I watched the row of B&Bs as we walked by, and spotted a couple pubs. I held out for the last in the row. The rest of the group was walking down to the beach and they were going to put us on a bench, but I took A. up to the Victoria Hotel and failed to be seated with a view in the dining room, but succeeded in ordering a glass of Whitby Saltwick Nab and a bag of crisps for A. This let us go sit in the garden, with a lovely, if somewhat windy, but at least not cold, view of Robin Hood’s Bay. After we had eaten and I had drank, we felt refreshed so we took photos and video and awaited the return of the more intrepid members of the group who walked down to the beach and then back up.
We drove back a different route. Looking at the heather on the quilty hills is very delightful.
We finally had the dinner that was planned for us yesterday — supermarket pizzas, thoughtfully chosen to fit our preferences. Of course A. does not like pizza, so I stopped at the coop and bought a bunch of groceries including bread and slices of what seemed to be pretty similar to kraft american, right down to being wrapped singles. It worked! They had a toasty bag; I need to get one of those. Melted and toasted and no mess to speak of. I had also bought fruit and fed her grapes and strawberries and an apple. She also had more chips. She liked the coop brand.
My cousins had a bottle of the Jack Daniels honey whiskey that was a tasty element of a drink I had in Maine. It is also fine with ice. They do not drink whisky, so they seem not at all to mind me drinking it.
We hung out for a bit, and then left at 7:30 because A. was losing it, and also second cousin R. was due to call his mum. We will figure out in text when we will see each other again, but probably not on Monday.
We started some laundry. I figured since the washer unit here does not have a drying feature, there had to be a drying rack. I found it, which was very helpful.
