Sunday: In which we drive to Canada
Aug. 21st, 2022 11:00 pmI had the presence of mind (!!!) to move all the food that might go bad in the fridge to the freezer _the night before_. I even took a nap earlier in the day, so the frenetic wandering around would not wipe me out. That meant the last dishwasher run was mostly for the fridge containers being cleaned and put away.
Also, while we have mini fridges in the rooms, I am not planning on doing any eating in the rooms this trip (only a coffee maker in the room and the trip is short), so packing the food for the trip was just snacks. The April trip to Virginia was a recent reminder of Snacks We Eat vs Snacks We Don‘t Eat.
A. is using her own luggage and picked out her own outfits, which made packing her up easy. I realized that my Disney kit works perfectly for this trip (because it is going to be warm, and might rain), which made packing me easy. I even set up my clothes the night before.
That made the morning ludicrously easy. Suspiciously easy, actually. I‘d done ArriveCAN on Friday (and I‘d done the passport entry and vaccination info months earlier). We already all had covid last month, so I wasn‘t particularly anxious about that being an issue. All I had to do was put away the dishes drying in the rack, collect A.‘s chargers and computer, and bring the bags downstairs. I had checked T.‘s bag yesterday, and he didn‘t even need a packing list this time.
A. took a shower last night, had her outfit for today planned and has been making her own breakfast lately, so even that part was easy. She‘s been moving her getting-up time earlier to prepare for this trip and for school, so _that_ was easy.
The rest of this summer has truly had its downsides — minimal travel, everyone unwilling to meet in person, everyone getting covid despite extensive precautions, the last week or so of frenetic I‘m Going to Learn How to Do Everything on A.‘s part. But the impact _today_ has been absolutely amazing.
I could not be happier about the maturity of both my kids, and how much they have grown up in just a few months. Later this year, T. will get eligible and well-prepared to take his driver‘s license exam. Both kids are able to prepare their own breakfast and get themselves up in the morning and manage their own clothing — T.‘s now doing his own laundry completely.
Next up: house cleaning! But not until _after_ we get home. Right now: fun! I‘m hoping for lunch at Druthers and dinner at Big Ditch, but we‘ll see what happens.
Lunch at Druthers was excellent! I would happily return. I had a pizza.
Dinner at Big Ditch was also excellent. I had the pork belly BLT. Really, really good. If you are in NY state, drinking witbier is a really good choice.
We went through the checkpoint within about 15 minutes or less of when I projected our arrival at 9 pm. We were very tired, and a little frazzled parking and checking in. There were fireworks over the falls. The falls are lit at night. It is goofily awesome. The view from our rooms is absolutely amazing.
