I had a delightful phone call with K.
I had a zoom with my cousin S. — he has been reading a bit about Damon Centola (complex contagion — marginally more complex theory of how ideas / behavior spread). I very rarely talk to him, so it was nice to catch up.
Fancy Friday was fun.
I’ve been feeling pretty annoyed that so many people I _think_ are basically sensible are unable to do the basic math of, hey, this subreddit compares itself to 4chan and, Martin Shkreli used to be a moderator here and come up with the obvious answer of, you know, probably these guys are NOT good guys, even if they are taking on people I really dislike. The enemy of my enemy is NOT necessarily my friend. I mean, should be pretty basic! But apparently, it is easier to do that enemy of my enemy calculation and stop, than it is to look up the tagline for the subreddit, and read even _one_ article about the subreddit’s history.
Also, making finance a morality play is always a FAIL.
Actually, almost nothing is a binary morality play. I feel like we ought to be doing better than this. I am disappointed.
HOWEVER, it is very nice that news out of Washington DC is uniformly competent people doing competent things. Learning that DC judges are insisting on pre-trial holding onto people that local judges in southern states were prepared to just let wander around with minimal bail or restrictions is also very encouraging. If we’ve got the guard all over DC because of people, and then we feel like it isn’t worth the trouble to lock those people up, somewhere, a mistake was made. And I don’t think having the guard all over DC was the mistake part.
