I've blogged about this before, but I _suck_ at navigating legal calendars. This is a post that will document another effort to find out where this is in the process -- initial stuff was supposed to happen on the 11th; I don't know if it did.

http://europeanlawblog.eu/?tag=joined-cases-c-19912

I didn't even realize this:

"last year the Dutch Council of State already asked whether a decision to deny an application with the argument that an asylum seeker may avoid persecution in their home country by remaining discreet about their sexual orientation is contrary to EU law or not. In other words: whether EU law prohibits that asylum seekers are send back into the closet by Member States. In the same judgement, it also asked whether lesbian, gay or bi asylum seekers can be returned to countries where same sex sexual activities are a criminal offense. This reference is still pending before the Court."

There are clearly other pending questions so I shouldn't expect a quick outcome.

Amazingly cool index of related stuff with good links:

Their news page is incredible:

I had _no_ idea things were moving so fast in the national high courts.

If anyone has any idea how to figure out where things actually are in the process and/or has a method for predicting when there might be further news, I'd love to hear about it. The thing on the calendar is 3 joined cases and I _think_ the process of those started a year ago:

When I was young(er) (I don't do this anymore, I swear. Really. It's probably been years. I think), my sisters and I, and then later various friends, used to think it was hysterically funny to all stare at some point in space where there wasn't _anything_ at all, and then watch other people look there, too. Obvs, we did this in public places. Equally obvious, this is a way to exploit innate gaze following to humorous effect (if you have my sense of humor).

Have you ever done this? Were you ever the initiator? Was it funny? Why?

I've done it. I think I "learned" this as a game (likely from my cousin J.), but I definitely initiated it with other people later. It was funny because we could "make" other people do something and then they'd be all confused and not understand what had happened (har de har har -- yeah, I'm not proud of this and, like I said, I don't do this any more. Altho I can't swear I won't teach my kids to play this game.).

I assumed this was a normal childhood game that everyone played. However, I am increasingly suspicious it's actually not that normal at all. Any takers?

ETA: Apparently Milgram did this. Now I feel even more ashamed.

This. This. This. In so many ways, this. Altho I almost always add the poly aspect as well. I love that there's an essay in the NYT about a woman (married monogamously to a man) who says _this_.

Fantastic.

I wish I'd thought to bring it up randomly. That's brilliant.

ETA: Turns out I am Not OK with criticism of this article that involves the b word. I've turned comments off entirely, so I don't find out if there's anything else involving criticism of this article that I am also not OK with.

Just a brief addendum to my trip report. On one of the many, many trips through it's a small world, people behind me were attempting to spot one or more hidden mickeys in it's a small world. I didn't remember there being any on that ride, and said so -- they were politely skeptical of me saying there wasn't one. Since they seemed sensible, I checked on my phone and on the next trip through, took a good hard look at the vines hanging down around the elephant and monkey.

Sure enough: one of those vines doesn't have leaves: it has mickey heads. Who knew? Kinda cool.
