In this outing, Black Jack Geary begins the book by waffling. He can't seem to get his ass out of Dilawa until his trusty sidekick kicks him back into motion. Clearly, so close to Alliance space, he's freaking out about the risk of continuing, even tho the risk of staying put is as bad. Off he goes, to another battle, another POW camp and more tough decisions. Intel discovers that the Syndics have been holding a bunch of ships in a "reserve flotilla" to patrol their far border -- against the still-deeply-secret aliens. Further, Intel has discovered reasons to believe that the "reserve flotilla" has been redeployed to deal with the Lost Fleet.
In the course of avoiding systems with Hypernets, Geary and company avoid an attack by the aliens. They arrive a little too late to help rescue more Alliance ships, but pick up some pods and more information. And then: home again, home again! Just in time for their fuel cells to run out exactly as the battle is won. Thanks to the clever and determined efforts of Jack's Grand Niece Jane (hmmmm).
So we end the book in Alliance Territory, the traitors in the Lost Fleet fully smoked out, the plot to enthrone Jack as Dictator of the Alliance (at least temporarily) in abeyance and actual Admirals of the Alliance scared shitless. Should be fun in the next outing, when we'll find out how many more systems are destroyed by the aliens and others before the remaining hypernets are protected. And just what are the aliens up to, anyway? And why?
Don't start here! It won't make any sense. These weirdly pious (May the Living Stars Guide Us) mil sf novels continue to entertain. I'm buying them on the kindle.
ETA: It is so weird to read about all these star systems bypassed by the hypernet. I keep reading Interstate for hypernet.
