You ever read Sam Posey's _Playing With Trains_? It's mostly about revisiting his childhood obsession with model railroading, but he touches heavily on the decline of train culture in America. One of the interesting bits in it is his recollection of taking the train from NY to FL as a kid, so he revisited this and took the modern Amtrak on the same run.
