Amazing reading: sterilization for young, childfree women harder to access than abortion

https://scholarship.law.umn.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1247&context=lawineq

Sofia is described as trying to access sterilization in the early 2000s, and having to travel to California to access this _legal_ care.

I knew this was difficult to access, because I had a friend trying to get this in Washington State who really struggled. But wow.

I’m filing all this under “parenting” because making it hard for people to choose _not_ to become parents surely comes under whatever we’ve got that passes for parenting policy and values in this country.

ETA:

Also in that article — we don’t _have_ an affirmative right to sterilization in this country AND what we do have is dependent upon Roe v Wade.

Highly recommend reading the whole thing. It’s going to be very hard to avoid unwanted / unintended pregnancies by supporting everyone who never wants to have a(nother) child to access sterilization, when a bunch of the states with reprehensible limits on accessing other reproductive care ALSO make it difficult to impossible to access sterilization.

We really do need an affirmative right to reproductive care as part of regular medical care, and that reproductive care has to involve the full suite of services.
